Dry skin

Dry skin gets more common with age. A cream or ointment on damp skin helps it hold on to water.

Ingredients that help

  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which draw water into the skin
  • Shea butter, jojoba oil, dimethicone, petrolatum, and mineral oil, which seal it in
  • Ceramides are also common in moisturizers for dry skin

What dermatologists recommend

  • Take short, warm (not hot) showers, and pat your skin dry.
  • Moisturize within 3 minutes of bathing, and again during the day. Use an ointment when skin is very dry.
  • Choose fragrance-free products, and skip ones with alcohol or retinoids while your skin is dry.
  • Run a humidifier, especially while you sleep.
  • See a dermatologist if dryness doesn't get better.
