Skincare for teens and kids

Pimples usually start between 9 and 13, and it's a great time to learn a simple routine. Here's what young skin needs, what it doesn't, and products we rate Teen-friendly or Gentle for kids from their ingredients.

Teens (12–17): a routine for pimples

  1. 1.Wash twice a day

Morning and night, and after sports, with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry; scrubbing makes pimples worse.

  2. 2.Treat pimples

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or adapalene are the over-the-counter acne treatments dermatologists start with. Begin every other day, and give it a few weeks (often 4 to 6) to work.

  3. 3.Moisturize

A light, oil-free moisturizer stops acne treatments from drying skin out, which helps you stick with them.

  4. 4.Wear sunscreen

SPF 30 or higher every day. Acne treatments can make skin more sensitive to the sun.

  5. 5.Hands off

Picking and popping can leave scars and dark marks that last longer than the pimple.

Kids (3–11): keep it gentle

  1. 1.Keep it simple

A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, a moisturizer if skin feels dry, and sunscreen. That's all most kids need.

  2. 2.Choose mineral sunscreen

Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every 2 hours outdoors and after swimming.

  3. 3.Skip the trends

Retinol, exfoliating acids, and anti-aging serums aren't made for young skin and can cause rashes.

When to see a doctor

If pimples are deep or painful, leave scars or dark marks, affect how your child feels about themselves, or haven't improved after a couple of months of over-the-counter treatment, a doctor or dermatologist can help. For babies under 3, ask a pediatrician before using any skincare beyond the basics.

Common questions

What skincare does a teenager with acne need?
A gentle cleanser twice a day, an acne treatment with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or adapalene, an oil-free moisturizer, and daily sunscreen. If pimples are painful, leave scars or dark marks, or don't improve after a couple of months, see a doctor or dermatologist.
Can kids use retinol or skincare acids?
Dermatologists don't recommend them for children. Kids' skin doesn't need anti-aging products, and retinoids and exfoliating acids can cause red, itchy rashes. Jouaxia rates products with them Not for kids or Use with care.
When can kids start using acne products?
Adapalene is sold over the counter from age 12. For children under 12 with pimples, check with a doctor first; benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are often fine but are best started gently.
How does Jouaxia rate products for kids and teens?
From the ingredient list, with published rules: anti-aging retinoids, hydroquinone, exfoliating acids, fragrance, and essential oils are flagged for kids; prescription retinoids and hydroquinone need a doctor for teens. It's general guidance, not medical advice, and it doesn't account for concentration.
